School-Wide Positive Behavior Intervention and Support Plan

*Be Safe * Be Respectful *Be Responsible

 

The entire staff of Broad Avenue Elementary School, in accordance with The School Climate Bill of Rights, has set goals to establish a healthy school environment that supports all students in every aspect of their well-being.

In an effort to achieve this goal, we have developed a School-Wide Behavior Code and Discipline Plan that values fair and consistent guidelines for implementing and developing a culture of discipline based on positive behavior interventions and away from punitive approaches that infringe on instructional time.  

 

Caught Being “Beary” Good

Students have the opportunity to earn Caught Being “Beary” Good certificates from staff any time during the day. Certificates are taken home for parents to sign and then brought back to school to be entered into a monthly prize drawing.

 

STEPS TOWARD POSITIVE DISCIPLINING OF STUDENTS

  1. Classroom teacher is in charge of own discipline. Teacher will initiate a set of classroom rules, which follow our school norms *Be Safe *Be Respectful *Be Responsible.   Teachers will focus on Community Building and the Restorative Justice approach to discipline. Restorative justice is an approach to wrongdoing that focuses on repairing the harm, encouraging responsibility and involvement of all who are impacted by the wrong.
  2. For serious and habitual breaking of rules teacher shall use other strategies as needed:
  1. Call or write a note, text or email parents.
  2. Conference with parents.
  3. Initiate a behavior card for the student by:

                   *requesting card from the office

                   *contacting parents to set up the plan

                   *conference with administrator to work with the student, teacher and family

                  d.    Send child, with work to complete, to a colleague for a reflective “time out.”

                  e.    Make out an office referral form and send student to the office when above consequences

                      have not been effective.

 

  1. Follow the same steps for any situations that occur outside the classroom (yard, lunch benches)
     a. Noon aides will use the “reflection zone” as a “time out”
  1. Behavior Regulated by the Laws of the State of California (Ed. Code 48900-48915) and Board of Education Policy.
      a. Teachers have the right to suspend students from the classroom for that day and the following day.
      b. Administrators have the right to suspend from school and extend the teacher imposed suspensions to a               suspension from school based on each individual case.
  1. In addition LAUSD will suspend and/or expel students in possession of a gun (including toy guns) or any dangerous  object.  This includes fireworks, lighters, tobacco, alcohol, or drugs of any kind.   

Per BUL-5747.1 Abolition of Corporal Punishment

Corporal discipline, in any form, is not to be used within this District.

Under the law, “corporal punishment” is defined as willful infliction of, or willfully causing the infliction of, physical pain on a pupil.

Corporal punishment refers to the intentional application of physical pain as a
method of changing behavior. District employees are directed to not engage in the
use of corporal punishment, which includes but is not limited to engaging in a
mutual physical altercation, food deprivation, hitting, painful body postures,
pinching, pushing, shaking, slapping, tripping, use of excessive exercise drills, or
prevention of use of restrooms.

The Superintendent encourages the use of positive approaches
to student discipline and classroom management to ensure that students conform to
expected behavior norms permitting them to derive greater benefits from the
educational program. 


 

ANTI-BULLYING POLICY

“Anti-Bullying” Policy

The administrators, teachers, and staff of Broad Avenue Elementary School are committed to enforcing the LAUSD “anti-bullying” policy, which states:

LAUSD is committed to providing a safe learning and working environment; will not tolerate bullying or any behavior that infringes on the safety or well-being of students, employees, and any other persons within the District’s jurisdiction; and will not tolerate retaliation in any way when bullying has been reported. This includes while in school, at school-related events, and traveling to and from school. District policy continues to require all schools and all personnel to promote mutual respect, tolerance, and acceptance among students and staff. “All students and staff of public primary, elementary, junior high, and senior high have the inalienable right to attend campuses which are safe, secure, and peaceful.”  [California State Constitution, Article 1, Section 28(c)]

Bullying is defined as aggressive behavior that involves an imbalance of real or perceived physical or psychological power among those involved.  Typically, the behavior is repeated over time and includes the use of hurtful words and/or acts.  Bullying behaviors may include but are not necessarily limited to, the following: 

  • Verbal:  Hurtful name-calling, teasing, gossiping, making threats, making rude noises, spreading hurtful rumors.
  • Nonverbal:  Posturing, making gang signs, leering, staring, stalking, destroying property, using graffiti or graphic images, or exhibiting inappropriate and/or threatening gestures or actions.
  • Physical:   Hitting, punching, pushing, shoving, poking, kicking, tripping, strangling, pulling, fighting, beating, biting, spitting, or destroying property.
  • Emotional (Psychological):  Rejecting, terrorizing, extorting, ostracizing, defaming, intimidating, humiliating, blackmailing, manipulating friendships, isolating, using peer pressure, or rating or ranking personal characteristics.
  • Cyber Bullying:  Sending insulting or threatening messages by phone, e-mail, text, websites, social media, or any other electronic or written communication.

 

Administrators and staff are responsible for creating an environment where the school community understands that bullying behavior is inappropriate and will not be tolerated.

 

Students must also take responsibility for helping to create a safe environment:

  • Treat everyone with respect.
  • Be sensitive as to how others might perceive your actions or words.
  • Do not engage in or contribute to bullying behavior, actions, or words.
  • Report bullying behavior to a trusted adult.
  • Never engage in retaliatory behavior or ask, encourage, or consent to anyone’s taking retaliatory actions on your behalf.
